Causes of Floodings in MEDC
- coastal areas were drained since the 16th century= level of land shrunk
- today, Netherlands polders(low lying land protected by embankments)
- low lying areas of land behind the coast are protected by natural sand dunes
> embankments built are easily knocked down if they are not maintained under good conditions
- storm surge(sudden rise of sea because of atmosphere pressure associated with wind and storms)
> strong wind from the north blows towards the south where it is the Northern Sea’s narrower and shallower area
> the surge of water may causes sea-level to rise above a metre/waves several metres high
- 3 Dutch Rivers that flow through the country
- global warming + more storm surges = more chance of coastal flooding
- melting glaciers and ice increased 4-6 metres of sea level in the past 125,000years
